The beauty and barbershop industry is as personal as it gets.
You’re turning your hopes and dreams for your appearance over to someone else, often somebody you’ve gotten to know and trust over the course of several sessions. That person is a professional who brings their training, experience, and inventiveness to the chair to create the look you’re seeking to help you feel good about yourself.
Clients bond with each other too, sharing everything from local gossip to world news to sports to new hairstyles and treatments. The path to beauty and style, or just a good haircut, is best shared with your friends, neighbors, and visitors from all walks of life.
A locally owned business is where you get the most individualized attention from staff and where you know the owners are invested in you and your community, supporting other local businesses, schools, public services, and nonprofit agencies.
And many cosmetologists are independent entrepreneurs, managing their own business affairs while staying up to date with the industry and zeroing in on their customers’ needs and desires. They deserve our support as well!

Chatty Shack Salon & Med Spa
Not everyone was confident enough to start a business in a pandemic year, but sisters Christy Silva and Casey Diggins did just that when they opened Chatty Shack Salon & Med-Spa, located right behind the Casa Grande Museum.
Co-owner and stylist Christy Silva says they’ve been busy since they started taking customers on September 1, 2020.
“We’ve had a great deal of support,” Silva says. “We’ve been rolling since we’ve opened.”
The staff is local with many years of experience in the community and with a built-in clientele, which has helped make the Chatty Shack an instant success.
Services range from a hair salon to nails, permanent make-up, and Med-Spa services that include facials, skin rejuvenation, laser hair removal, spider vein treatment, Botox, hair restoration, weight loss, and more.
The staff operates independently of each other depending on the service. Booking appointments can be done online, in person, or with the staff member themselves.

“I have a passion for this industry,” says Dulong, “so making sure we have the latest training and certifications, both national and international are very important.”
Over the years, K’Bella has also become known as the place “where the celebrities go” when visiting Arizona. It started with Sarah and Bristol Palin and the latest being Duane Chapman a.k.a. “Dog the Bounty Hunter” and his wife, Francie.

Chi-Town Barbershop and Salon
On the walls of the Maricopa shop, you might see some framed Chicago sports memorabilia but owner Haywood Price has made it so no matter where you are from, no matter your gender, he wants you to feel welcome. Originally from Illinois and a former semi-pro athlete in both basketball and football, Price moved to Maricopa in 2016. He opened the first Chi-Town shop in August 2018. The second shop opened in Casa Grande at the beginning of 2021.
“Here we provide everything from braids, press and curl, haircuts, fades, shaves,” says Price. “At the second location, we do the same, except we also do nails.”
Both locations have walk-in service and take appointments. Currently there are seven barbers/stylists at the Maricopa location and five at the Casa Grande shop. Price says there is room to hire more and anyone interested can apply at the Maricopa location.
“We’re just looking to continue serving the community the best we can,” says Price.

Shear Gossip by Sabrina
You’ll find very few places with the longevity and success of Shear Gossip Salon and Day Spa by Sabrina. Owned and operated by Sabrina Ruiz, the salon has been in business since 1995. Located in downtown Casa Grande, it offers a variety of independent services — including nails, massage, facials, and chemical peels.
“The key to success is just enjoying what you do and that shows,” says Ruiz.
For Ruiz, it has been a joy to be a part of the community and her clients are going on multiple generations now.
“First it was the moms, then their daughters that have grown up with me and some of their babies now,” says Ruiz. “I feel like I am a part of their lives. Repeat business has been a big part of our success.”
The salon has eight independent stylists, an aesthetician, nail tech, and a massage therapist. It accepts walk-ins, however, it is better to call or go online to set an appointment for the particular service, maybe make a day of it!

Sports & Cuts
It’s not often you can go to a barbershop to play pool, but at Sports & Cuts, you can do just that. Like any good barbershop, you can also talk sports while watching highlights on one of the TVs—with sometimes the talk turning into a sharp verbal jab session.
Going into year nine, Sports & Cuts has two locations. The original shop is off John Wayne Parkway in Maricopa.
“We wanted to create a spot where guys could come relax, get a haircut, watch some sports and hang out,” says General Manager Francisco Vallejo.
In 2019, Sports & Cuts opened up its second location off Smith-Enke Road. It has a pool table along with the ability to schedule your appointment, for more of a V.I.P. treatment.
Vallejo says the shops are almost back to a pre-Covid atmosphere and gives “big, big, thanks” to the customers who stayed with them after the shutdowns.
